| Margaret Hollis |
Margaret Hollis left South Wilts in 1965, when the sixth form was small enough that everyone taking science knew everyone else taking science. She qualified in medicine, came back to Salisbury, and stayed - thirty-four years in the same practice, most of it as a partner, and long enough to be treating the grandchildren of her first patients.
"The thing nobody warns you about is continuity," she says. "You are not treating an illness, you are treating someone you have known for thirty years, whose mother you also knew. It is the best part of the job and it is the part that keeps you awake."
She retired in 2013 and is now a governor of two primary schools. She is happy to talk to anyone thinking about medicine, and, as she puts it, to anyone who remembers the old gymnasium. Grace Lim, who left in 2016 and is in her foundation years, is the person to ask about what the training looks like now.
