The strip of ground between the science block and the field has been a disused tennis court since the courts moved in 1998. From next spring it will be the centenary garden: planting, seating for about forty, and a path wide enough to be useful in February as well as June.
The design is by Sophie Trelawney, who left in 2010 and is now an architect working mostly on schools. She drew the proposal in her own time after the alumni coffee morning last autumn, and the brief she set herself was that it had to be a place sixth formers would actually sit in, not an ornament to walk past.
Groundworks start in the Easter holidays and the garden opens at the Festival on 3 July. It is funded entirely from the Centenary Fund, and the planting list still has gaps if anyone wants to take one.
